Why this recipe works

I love to make cookies with M&M’s whenever there is a holiday to celebrate. The candy-coated treat not only looks festive, but adds a fun twist to traditional chocolate chips.

The white chocolate chips in this recipe helps to sweeten up the cookie without interfering with the M&M chocolate flavor. Plus, it adds such a fun white color to play up the green from the M&M’s.

This recipe for St Patrick’s Day Cookies yields about 4 dozen large cookies. It’s simple to put together and they stay fresh for days. Simply refrigerate or freeze for crispy delicious cookies.

Recipe ingredients

This recipe uses all of the usual ingredients you’d find in a chocolate chip cookie recipe. It calls for flour, baking soda, salt, butter, both brown and granulated sugars, eggs, vanilla, and chips. What really makes it special are the add ins.

  • White Chocolate Chips: the white chips in this recipe add a delicious sweetness and play up the green color of the M&M’s. If you can’t find white chocolate chips, regular semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips would work too.
  • Green M&M’s: you can usually find special packages of holiday M&M’s around St. Patrick’s Day at the grocery store. However, you can always just pick out the green M&M’s from a large package of the candy. And, yes, you can always just use whatever colors you have on hand!

How to make St Patrick’s Day Cookies

You are going to love how simple this festive recipe is with no special cookie cutters or frosting required! To start, line two baking sheets with parchment paper or baking mats.

Whisk together the dry ingredients. Then, in a separate bowl use a hand mixer to cream together the butter and sugars. Add in the eggs, vanilla, and dry ingredients.

Fold in only a cup of the white chocolate chips (save the rest to top the cookies with). Scoop out balls of dough and place on prepared cookie sheets.

To make these extra festive, press a 3-4 green M&M’s on top of the cookie batter along with the remaining white chocolate chips. Make sure you leave about 3 inches between each cookie, as they will spread when they bake.

Bake the cookies for about 9-11 minutes, being careful not to over bake. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Recipe tips and FAQs

Check out my tips and FAQs to ensure the perfect St. Patrick’s Day cookie every time!

  • Don’t rush beating together the butter and sugars. You want the mixture to be very well combined and lighter in color. A handheld mixer is the best option for this.
  • If the dough seems crumbly, use your hands to squeeze it into a ball when placing on the cookie sheet.
  • Be careful not to overcrowd the baking sheet. These cookies will spread and need about 3 inches of space between each cookie.
How long should I bake cookies?

In general you want to bake cookies until they are about a minute from being completely cooked. That is because they will continue to cook when you take them out of the oven. Here, the cookies are ready anytime between 9-11 minutes, which is a good general time for any chocolate chip cookie.

How do I store M&M Cookies?

M&M cookies can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Or you can freeze for up to two months.

What to make with leftover M&M Cookies?

Ice cream sandwiches! These cookies are perfect to turn into ice cream sandwiches because of their size and thickness. Just add a softened scoop of vanilla ice cream between the cookies and freeze. Make extra festive by adding sprinkles to the edges of the ice cream.
