Why this recipe works!

This recipe is a great way to use up leftover bananas. I always seem to have brown bananas at my house so I love to make different variations of banana bread.

What makes this bread so special are the swirls of Nutella throughout the bread. Here, I add dollops of Nutella in the middle and top layer of the batter. Then I swirl each layer throughout the bread using a toothpick or knife. That way everyone is guaranteed Nutella in their slice of bread.

Plus, Nutella Banana Bread, like most banana breads, is a great make-ahead option. This loaf stays fresh in the refrigerator for about a week. Or, you can freeze it in an airtight container for up to a month.

Recipe Ingredients

This recipe uses all of the basic ingredients needed for banana bread including: flour, sugar, bananas, oil, eggs, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. The one necessary addition is the Nutella.

  • Ripe Bananas: as with any banana bread recipe, this loaf calls for ripe bananas. This means that the bananas should be brown or starting to brown on the outside. No green banana here! You can use two large bananas or three small/medium bananas to make a cup of mixture.
  • Nutella: can’t skip the Nutella in this recipe! Generic chocolate-hazelnut spreads work in a pinch, but really Nutella is the best if you can find it.
  • Flour: I use all-purpose flour in this recipe, but if you are looking for a gluten-free alternative you can swap in a cup-for-cup brand like King Arthur or Gold Medal.

Tips for Making Nutella Swirl Banana Bread

Read on to see my tips and trick for making the best Nutella Banana Bread!

  • Make sure you’re using ripe bananas. You want to be able to mash them easily so they incorporate well into the batter.
  • You could make this all in one bowl. The recipe calls for separate bowls for dry and wet ingredients, but you could just do them all together.
  • If your Nutella is hard, microwave a small amount in a bowl. And swirl more than you think you need to! Get that flavor all throughout the bread.
  • Toothpick check for doneness of the bread since the top will appear brown from the Nutella.
  • Let the bread cool completely before slicing to prevent it from falling apart.
Can you use too much banana in banana bread?

Yes! Be sure to not overdo the banana amount in banana bread or you could end up with a mushy wet bread. One cup of mashed banana is needed for a loaf of banana bread, which is about 2-3 ripe bananas.

What to make with Nutella?

Nutella is excellent served on white bread or as a topping for fruit like bananas and strawberries. You can also swirl Nutella into your baked goods or add to a milkshake. Crispy Nutella Truffles are an easy no-bake treat to have on hand.
