Ingredients

ingredients needed to make drink including vodka and ginger beer.

To make an Apple Cider Moscow Mule you will need: apple cider, vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

  • Apple Cider: apple cider is a raw and unsweetened drink made from pressed apples. It’s usually available during the fall and winter months. In a pinch, you can use apple juice in its place, but be sure you’re not using apple cider vinegar.
  • Vodka: use a good quality vodka here. I always prefer Tito’s for its smooth finish.
  • Ginger Beer: despite its name, ginger beer is actually a nonalcoholic drink made from ginger, sugar, and water. It’s got some spice to it from the ginger and is essential for making a Moscow Mule.
  • Lime: a squeeze of fresh lime juice is another essential flavor in a Moscow Mule. Don’t use too much of it here that it hides the flavor of the apple cider.

This drink is best served in a copper mug. This is the classic way to drink a Moscow Mule and keep the drink super cold as well.

You can make this cocktail in the mug rather than having to use a shaker. Feel free to start with ice already in the mug. I like to add it later so the ice cubes don’t freeze together.

Firstly, pour in the 3 ounces of apple cider. Next, add in 2 ounces of both vodka and ginger beer. Then, add in a squeeze of lime juice and stir the liquids altogether.

Add in the ice cubes until the glass is full. Stir again to make sure the ice cubes don’t all stick together.

Garnish with a cinnamon stick and wedge of lime. Serve immediately.

Expert Tips

  • Be sure you are using apple cider and not apple juice or apple cider vinegar here!
  • Use a good quality vodka.
  • Ginger beer is a nonalcoholic drink that can be found in most grocery stores. It adds both fizz and a hint of spice to the drink.
  • I like to add the ice cubes in afterwards so they don’t freeze together when making the drink.
  • You can easily double or triple the recipe and make a batch of these ahead of time. When ready to serve, just pour into a cooper mug and add ice.
